It seems like Tilda Swinton is the type not to pass up on a devious character, Sal in The Beach just one of her many bad incarnations. In the movie as in the Alex Garland book on which it is based, Sal is the queen bee of a ragtag, ragamuffin band of world-weary potheads populating a hidden pocket of sheer beauty in a Thai island.

If you chance upon heaven on earth, would you loose it on path-beating, climate-changing people? Sal is just doing everything in her power to preserve this secret garden for a select few—and won't be above burning you at the stake to that end. You best pray you are addled with shrooms by then; she really is the stuff of hippie nightmares.
