Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo! Disney's 'Cinderella' Trailer Arrives

November 19, 2014

Calling every eligible maiden and gentleman: The trailer for Disney's live-action Cinderella is here.

As we have reported, Cate Blanchett will play evil socialite and Cinderella's stepmother Lady Tremaine. While Blanchett will put on the black hat, Helena Bonham-Carter will slip on the goody two-shoes as Ella's fairy godmom, a departure from her role in Disney's live-action Alice in Wonderland.

Cinderella's trailer promises to be a short game of spot the Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones actors. Lily James, no stranger to period garb as Rose in the Abbey, will portray the title role, while Richard Madden will put his swashbuckling and equestrian training to use as the Prince. Our always harried Daisy from the Abbey, Sophie McShera, will also play one half of the stepsisters. The other stepsister will be Holliday Grainger of The Borgias fame.

ICYMI, Lucifer is in the trailer too.

Cinderella, directed by Kenneth Branagh, looks like it will play out a straightforward retelling of the 1950 Disney film of the same name. Clearly there will be no drastic revisions here or hagiographies of amoral characters much like Maleficent in May. A relief in some ways, an opportunity cost in others. It would be a shame, for one, if Disney suddenly obstructs the ground being covered by Maleficent or Frozen, in terms of gender equality, to wax nostalgic about plots that would be in line with gender roles for 1950s women

Then again, there really is no need for Disney to reinvent the wheel. Ever After with Drew Barrymore and Anjelica Huston is already the best so far in terms of retold Cinderella stories.

Cinderella will drop in theaters in March, bibbidi bobbidi boo.
